Weekly(yeah right) movie review

I lied. I don't get out to the movies that often. But I will try to keep it current.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
Now, I started reading the book before I saw the movie. I was really enjoying the book, and I have to admit I had my reservations about seeing the movie. That, and I hate seeing children's movies right after they come out. There are too many unsupervised children screaming and throwing candy. My worste fears were confirmed when we entered the theatre. Not only was there a large group of unsupervised 9 year olds, they were sitting in the very back row. That's where I sit dammit! On top of that they were behaving rather obnoxiously before the movie started. They yelled. They screamed. They shouted out all the answers to the movie quizes, incorrectly I might add. Needless to say, I was fully prepared to not enjoy myself.

Then something amazing happened. The lights went down and they all fell silent. They remained silent through the entire movie. Which was good, because I really liked it.

So let's discuss our friend Harry. When we first meet him he is under the care of his Aunt and Uncle. Who just so happen to be the most horrible people imaginable. They blatantly ignore poor Harry and force him to sleep in the "cupboard under the stairs". Good thing for him, his destiny lies somewhere far greater. He is a sorcerer you see. And according to many, a damn good one. After much turmoil he finally gets ahold of his acceptance letter to Hogwart's Academy. He is whisked away from his personal hell by a giant on a flying motorcycle and taken to a whole new world. At Hogwarts he finds new friends and a few enemies. You see, there are evil forces afoot that would love to snuff him out. Think of a Luke Skywalker/Darth Vader type conflict.

Obviously I won't reveal the outcome, but let me say this; you will fall in love with that character Harry Potter. He is played by Daniel Radcliffe. You may even fall in love Daniel Radcliffe. Haley Joel Osmet look out! Chris Columbus did a beautiful job of staying true to the essential story of The Sorcerer's Stone. I was heavily immersed in the story. I kept thinking; "Why couldn't I get a letter like that when I was little?" and "I wish I was sorcereress!" It was so much fun to watch. I understand the phenomena now. I understand why the kids behind us shut the hell up the second it started. Remember though, I am not a 9-year-old. I'm 23. This movie can be enjoyed by anyone. It's British for God's sake. The humor is wonderful.

At one point during the movie, Harry is in a sticky situation. He isn't aware of the "bad guy" coming up behind him. Right then the little girl behind me whispered softly to herself; "Turn around Harry!" My sentiments exactly. I loved him so much I couldn't bear to see him get hurt. There were many desperate pleas whispered by the girl including; "Get up Harry!" I found myself quite smitten with the whole experience.

In conclusion:

GO SEE THIS DAMN MOVIE!

That's all. Thank-you.
